Bring your book club to the store and meet with members of other clubs. Exchange ideas, talk about books and get a 20% discount on all books registered with The Book Tavern from your book club reading list. That discount is good on both used and new books.
Of course, what event would be a happy hour without drinks? We can’t promise booze every time, but coffee will always be available along with something like lemonade, sweet tea or wine. If you just have to have a mixed drink, we’re totally ok with you playing bartender as long as the first tumbler goes to us… or sippy cup.

How do you register? Just email us the list of books your book club is reading. We’ll keep those books in stock so even if we don’t have a used copy, the book you need will be available.

postscript: saavy tip – start your own book club and get them to read all the books you want to get a discount!

He will be discussing his new book The Disappearance, a novel about the life of a young boy after his mother goes missing. Semi-autobiographical, the work captures the depth of emotion and trauma of losing what is most precious in life.

Synopsis:

Georgia, 1972. After Helen Harmon drops her three children off at school and her husband, Jerry, leaves for his job as a security guard at the state prison, she heads to her office at the Winkler Outdoor Advertising Company in Valdosta, Georgia—and is never heard from again.

The Harmon family can’t believe that Helen would simply vanish, but the thought of foul play is just too horrible to contemplate. Weeks and months pass, and the family comes to slowly realize that something horrendous and tragic happened the summer of 1972.

Helen and Jerry’s son, thirteen-year-old Harold, takes the loss especially hard. Since his father is an emotional wreck, and his older sister moves away, Harold takes on the heavy responsibility of helping his younger sister cope with the loss. But his mother’s inexplicable disappearance haunts him. If he could only have the closure that every person who loses a loved one needs and wants, maybe he could somehow get on with his life.

Harold grows to maturity, still longing for the mystery to be solved, even though it appears to be hopeless. But when a startling discovery is made by two brothers, it ignites a community’s mandate for the truth, sending Harold on a quest to uncover the long-buried reality for himself.

Every day across America, thousands of books are printed with nefarious destruction awaiting them. Each Barnes & Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, Wal-Mart, etcetera take part in this insidious plot. If the book does not sell in time for them to maximize their profit, the poor dear is stripped of it’s cover and naked, it is thrown into the trash heap. This raping of books happensby the hundreds and thousands at every well-lit, cold hearted corporate establishment. Many do not even bother to recycle these pages for brothers and sisters to be birthed from this genocide.

So today, as we submit these brave, heroic pages to the sacrificial flames, we intone this Manifesto of Book Rights:

We Have the Right to be Read.
…to be shelved properly.
…to be held delicately with tender care.
…to have spines unbroken by harsh hands.
…to have untorn dustwrappers.
…to be unsoiled by careless coffee and noxious smoke.
…to be returned to our rightful homes
…to be retired from circulation with dignity.
…in short, to be praised for our merits, both in thought & aesthetic.

Coming soon: Video of Fahrenheit 1026°

Thanks to everyone who has rescued books this week. We’ve got nine more days to go before The Great Book Burning consumes the tares & chaff and perhaps a few noteworthy titles too. The responses to our pronouncement range from unspeakable consternation (though somehow they found words) to “could you please burn my high-school journal?!?” We’ve even had numerous complaints filed against us with various state and federal authorities so next Saturday promises to be more exciting than I’d anticipated. Please plan on joining us to witness our protest and proclamation.

The number one question I am asked since The Great Book Burning Sale began is whether or not The Book Tavern is really going to burn books? While the future is the future precisely because we can’t be as certain of what will happen as we are about what’s happening right this moment, I fully intend to burn books in front of our store on Saturday, January 9th as soon as the sky gets dark. Some people can’t believe we would consider the act of book burning because they know we hold a sacred feeling for words in print. I sympathize with a sensibility which seeks to preserve words and knowledge. It’s the main reason I am willing to let you buy the books discounted rather than see them burn. But they must go, because changes are coming. And on that fateful day, the Book Tavern must become Fahrenheit 1026°. This transformation is not purposeless. The Book Tavern has been in Downtown Augusta for over 4 years and remain relatively unchanged. In the wake of so many amazing stores closing near us, we realized an adaptation was quickly becoming necessary. So the change is coming. Keep watching the horizon. Join us on twitter, facebook, or subscribe to our email service. Come rescue books and make sure you are there on the ninth to witness the death of the old by fire!

p.s. – for those of you who think book burning is great, we also offer you this option: buy a book and reserve it for the fires. See Katie for details.

I’ve always loved moleskine journals. The legendary journal of hemingway and picasso whatever. I like then for the high quality paper and useful formats. Whether I need a sketchbook for doodling or just a small pocket sized place to keep my thoughts, moleskine has the answer. When I discovered their planners, my need for thought organization was complete. After examining options ranging from daily to monthly in a variety of sizes, I picked the notebook sized weekly format for 2009. It served me well and kept me from going crazier than I already am. With a week of schedule on one side and an adjoining page for my desperate need to make lists and doodle notes to myself, I found planning bliss. For 2010 I’m adding the month at a glance planner to the mix for better long range planning. I might even pick up a project planner which has an entire year mapped out on an accordion fold-out. We have a great selection of planners and journals right now. If you can’t find the moleskine you want, let me know and I’ll add it to the next order.
