Our Book Club is called WGBC. We are small - 7-10 per meeting, so no need to order...

June - The Forgotten Garden
July - Blackbird House by Alice Hoffman

Maybe instead of a burn pile of what some would be happy to take off your hands for free you could make a giant pile of books your giving away for free with some silly fake fire thing over it (a kind of symbolic gesture). Given the possibility of free books (a thing I've seen bookstores elsewhere do) a lot of people will likely come in and check out your other titles for when they can afford them. Please don't burn what other peoples minds could be enriched by. Thank you!

If so it means instant credits... then you can use those credits to replenish your store.

(or contact them.. they might even pick them up... have an office in Suwannee)

Debate aside, how do you guys plan to burn these books? How will the fire be maintained and controlled? I would like to remind you that it is prohibited to burn ANYTHING within the city limits, unless it is in a small grill with a cover. I can't imagine burning books in a grill would draw the attention you desire. With your store being in the middle of downtown, I would imagine this fire is going to be close to a number of structures and there are safety issues that need to be addressed.

Ach, let the haters hate and the whiners whine, David. Don't kowtow, don't whitewash, and don't apologize. And remember: Shock value is what makes it a successful campaign. Complaints and hand-wringing (and even a boycott or two) is a good sign that you're getting some valuable attention.

I don't know the bookselling business and i know i don't know it. I also know you DO know the business and that you wouldn't be in that business if you didn't love books. Most importantly, i know you're a man of honor and intelligence.

I'm sure you donate literally tons of print material to libraries, churches, and charities. I'm sure you do less harm than box-store retailers like Amazon, Barnes&Noble, and Walmart. If you say it's fit for disposal, that's good enough for me. Plus, it's just plain fun to burn stuff. Kudos!

Megan, Kimmie & Amelia,

While everyone is invited, I want to personally invite you to come on January 9th and witness what we are doing. The store will be open early, but the main event which has caused such concern and consternation (in which you are not alone) begins as soon as it gets dark. I feel confident you will leave satisfied no terrible thing has transpired.

David Hutchison

Well, I am slightly mollified to hear that you won't be destroying classic works like Huckleberry Finn (not that you'd ever do that!).

In defense of the out-dated books, though: what is out-dated to us now is classic and historical to them /then/. In a few years, those books that are so out of date now may actually be sold at auction for quite a lot. Penny magazines with little tiny comics in them from the turn of the (old) century sell for hundreds of dollars. I think it's just a matter of perception, there.

In any case, I hope the books find homes before they're burnt, and I wish you the best. :)

Kimmie and Megan (and any other open ears) -

I know the idea of burning books can seem outrageous and almost a sin to any book lover (including myself), but I don't think either of you are understanding exactly the type of books we will be burning. These are books that are outdated, such as "current events" from over a decade ago, book club editions (books that are essentially made to last just a few reads), and other non-essentials.

We have donated books to charities in the past and will always have a box ready for any charity that asks or that i've heard is in need. However, the books that we plan to burn would not be sufficient for such charities - and we would rather donate titles that we found acceptable.

I understand that our decision to burn books may cause us to lose your business and I respect that decision, but I do hope that you understand that we aren't unloading an armful of classics or children books into the fire.

Dear Book Tavern:

I'm with Kimmie on this one. I've shopped in your store and loved your variety and your vivacity. You offer to Augusta a service that we don't have a whole lot of exposure to.

However, I have two points of argument:

First point: If you want to get rid of them badly enough to BURN THEM IN THE BACK YARD, either mark down the prices more (say, 60-70%), since you will be making NO profit if you burn them, and at least if you've marked them down further than that you'll be making SOME profit, at least;

Second Point: OR, donate them to a charity or a library. At this point, you'll be losing money either way if you burn them or donate them, and frankly, I'm a little surprised that you would care so little for books (that I thought you claimed to love) to burn them en masse just because you can't sell them.

That behaviour strikes me as almost childish, and I'm frankly quite disappointed. I hold you in very high regard as a place of business, and I hope that you'll reconsider your Great Burn and put those books to a better use than kindling. You're too good for that kind of behaviour, and I have faith in you. Please don't shatter that.
