Tricia Hughes, Downtown Augusta Hero, humbling herselfby getting down on the floor and reading to young customers.
I snapped this photo tonight at First Friday where we had an amazing crowd for the four short hours we opened. Aside from fudge tastings and hot wassail warming our gullets, we started selling off our overstock for $5.00 or less per book. Saturday we’re open from 10am – 6pm and the overstock stacks will be out front under our tent and inside the store in every nook we can find. Plus all our regular inventory will still be 30% off including new, used and rare books along with chocolate, fudge, ugly dolls and stationary. The only thing not marked down right now are DVD’s, special orders and employees (none of them seemed eager to match our inventory discount with a pay cut).

The Book Tavern has too many books and the best way to get rid of books is fire. So we are pulling everything we can find out of the warehouse and on January 9th we’ll set fire to it all. Then, like a Phoenix from the ashes, it won’t be long until we recover from the GREAT BOOK BURNING of 2010!
Rescue these poor and needy books! Everything in the store will be 20% OFF starting the day after Christmas. Everything! New books, used books, rare books and even chocolate! We want as many souls to be spared the flames as possible.
Visit often as we count down to the fire. Special opportunities to save books will arise. Watch your inbox, Twitter, and Facebook. For the next 15 days, you can make the difference in the life of these books!
Yesterday I said we didn’t give away anything Sunday, but as happens so often, I was wrong. The unnamed lady below was so overcome with joy at finding the very book she wanted that her tears persuaded Katie to award her a set of marvelous handkerchiefs I has especially saved for just such a turn of events. Katie managed to snap this photo documenting the great comfort provided by the prize:

Of course, we didn’t post our giveaway or notify anyone by twitter, but we did give something away. Yesterday, I attempted to give something away with no success whatsoever. So if you want to impress your friends and cry joyous tears like the lady above, come fulfill the terms of our Dickens giveaway.
Today, we are giving away this fantastic copy of Tanny Wynette’s autobiography to the first person who sings at least one bar from the song of the same title in their best country twang.

Well originally, I set out to give away something every day this month. For the second time, I have missed a day. So I suppose it’s an every other day giveaway for July. Or more. You’ll just have to check in regularly or see. Or you can add us to your reader. Either way. Most nearly every day, I will post a new giveaway item this month. Today I am giving away a really keen two volume copy of Charles Dickens The Old Curiosity Shop. Even if you don’t particularly think much of Dickens, these books look cool and will make you look cool too.

What do you have to do to obtain these fine volumes? Simply tell me the title of the last chapter and how many cities in the United States are named for the author and they are yours. Buying a book from us in appreciation is optional. Buying a bag full of books is highly encouraged.
Yesterday, I failed to give away a free item. Actually, we gave away five of the six goodies already posted because noone came to get them on their respective giveaway day. I understand it’s hot out. And we want to give you something, so everything will remain available until it’s given away. But there is no understanding why I did not post a new giveaway yesterday. To make it up to you, we’re giving away a vintage Tolkien Box Set!

Of course, we can’t just give something so awesome to the first person to ask for it. Can we?
No.
Definitely not.
So here’s what you have to do. Come in and ask for it… while wearing a sticker supporting Tom Grant. Who is he and why does he need support? You can get those answers at weliketom.com. Tom has been editor at the Metro Spirit since 2005 and while I have not always agreed with his editorial decisions, he quietly sweats day in and day out for our city. Go visit the campaign to keep him in Augusta and then proudly sport a sticker supporting him, you’ll be rewarded even if you aren’t the one who gets the Tolkien.
I almost forgot! Today we are selling hundreds and hundreds of books for half price! And you don’t have to do anything to get that prize except show up before we close tonight!
